Lakeland Woman Rescues Hundreds of Horses from Slaughterhouses Through Grune Heidi Farm Rescue

Erika Gilbert, who grew up on a farm in Amish country Pennsylvania, runs Grune Heidi Farm Rescue in Lakeland, Florida, where she saves horses from slaughterhouses by purchasing them at auctions in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kentucky. Many of these horses, including former Amish buggy horses no longer able to work, are brought to her rescue farm where they receive grooming, care, and a safe environment. Gilbert carefully manages the number of horses she takes in, relying on donations, personal funds, and horse sales to support the operation.

Gilbert’s mission is to give these horses a second chance at life by rehoming them as academy, show, or trail horses for families. She emphasizes the importance of treating the horses with respect and care, believing they deserve to live fulfilling lives rather than being prematurely sent to slaughter. Volunteers assist in caring for the horses, helping Gilbert maintain a nurturing environment where the animals can thrive and enjoy their retirement.
