A routine day for the Jones County Sheriff’s Department turned into an animal rescue mission when a kitten was discovered trapped inside a car engine compartment. Deputy Melisa Kelland and Grants Administrator Lance Chancellor responded after hearing faint meows coming from a running vehicle parked near the Mississippi Department of Public Safety Driver’s License Bureau and the JCSD Training Center.
Unaware to the driver, the kitten had apparently hitched a ride inside the engine compartment. Once the vehicle was turned off, Deputy Kelland carefully reached under the car and rescued the frightened animal. The kitten was then handed over to local animal rescuer Murray Windham, who provided medical care, food, and water.
