Kilkivan Great Horse Ride Celebrates 40 Years of Heritage and Community Spirit

The Kilkivan Great Horse Ride is celebrating its 40th anniversary this weekend as part of the Kilkivan Country Festival, with a special commemorative ride retracing the original 1986 route from the Webb property at Thornside. The event, founded by the late Fabian Webb, has become a cherished tradition highlighting the region’s equestrian heritage and natural beauty, including rugged terrain near the historic Mount Clara Copper Smelter. The ride attracts experienced riders and fit horses, offering a challenging 30-kilometer trail culminating in a grand street parade in Kilkivan. Alongside the main ride, the festival features multiple trail rides, carriage rides, live music, and various equestrian and community activities.

David Lahiff, a former Kilkivan Shire mayor and local pioneer family member, has been deeply involved in the event’s history and organization, reflecting on its significance in preserving the area’s rural traditions and community spirit. The festival honors the legacy of Fabian Webb and other key contributors, with longstanding community support and volunteer efforts essential to its success. The event also celebrates Kilkivan’s place on the National Trail and its rich cultural heritage, continuing to draw visitors and riders from across Queensland and beyond.
