Khadijah Mellah, who made history in 2019 as the first hijab-wearing jockey to win a horse race in Britain by claiming the Markel Magnolia Cup at Goodwood Racecourse, is set to make her amateur racing debut at the same venue. Now 24, Mellah has balanced her passion for horse racing with completing a mechanical engineering degree and has been booked to ride Uncle Dick in the Gay Kindersley Memorial Amateur Riders Handicap. Her groundbreaking victory and continued presence in the sport have been praised as inspirational and significant for diversity in horse racing.
Beyond her racing achievements, Mellah co-founded the Riding A Dream Academy, an initiative aimed at encouraging young people from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds to engage with horse riding. She emphasizes the importance of visibility and relatable role models in fostering inclusion and excitement within the sport, hoping to inspire others to overcome challenges and pursue their ambitions in racing.
