Kerala Police Mounted Wing to Recruit Professionally Trained Equestrians for the First Time

Kerala Police’s mounted wing is undergoing a historic transformation by directly recruiting professionally trained equestrians for the first time, moving away from its previous deputation-based staffing model. The Public Service Commission released a rank list for 14 police constable positions in the mounted police, with appointments expected within two to three months. Selected candidates, including two ex-servicemen with military horse-riding experience, must complete a rigorous nine-month training program before joining the unit, which primarily handles night patrols, ceremonial duties, and official functions.

This shift addresses vacancies created by age-limit retirements and aims to strengthen the unit, which currently operates with 11 horses out of a sanctioned 25. The mounted police will also benefit from additional thoroughbred horses supplied by the Army’s Remount Veterinary Corps, enhancing their equine resources. The ongoing equine training program is set to finish by year-end, enabling Kerala Police to procure horses directly from the military in the future, marking a significant modernization of the force’s mounted capabilities.
