Kentucky Riders to Compete in Gaucho Derby to Support Off-Track Thoroughbreds

Two Kentucky horsewomen, Lucy Burnett and Bobbi Westbrook, are preparing to compete individually in the Gaucho Derby, a grueling 500-kilometer endurance race across Patagonia, Argentina. The 10-day event challenges riders with rugged terrain and variable weather while requiring them to switch mounts regularly among hardy regional horses. Both women, experienced in off-track Thoroughbreds and foxhunting, view the race as a personal challenge rather than a competition, using the opportunity to raise funds for Thoroughbred aftercare organizations Second Stride and Pirates’ Promise.

Burnett and Westbrook have launched a GoFundMe campaign aiming to raise $4,000 to support these nonprofits, reflecting their commitment to giving back to the horses that have shaped their riding careers. Alongside their demanding preparations and long travel to Argentina, they appreciate the support of their families and emphasize the importance of Thoroughbreds in their lives. The Gaucho Derby not only tests their endurance and horsemanship but also serves as a platform to promote the welfare and aftercare of off-track Thoroughbreds.
