Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter is currently experiencing an outbreak of kennel cough, a highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs, which has led to a temporary halt on adoptions and surrenders to protect animal health. Shelter staff, including Operations Manager Hannah Edwards and Unleashed Foundation founder Marian Eccles, emphasized that kennel cough typically causes a harsh, dry cough and mild symptoms but can be more serious for puppies, older dogs, or those with weakened immune systems—categories that include many shelter dogs.
The shelter suspects that public water bowls may have contributed to the spread of the illness and urges pet owners to keep their animals at home until symptoms resolve. While kennel cough often clears up on its own with rest and supportive care, more severe cases may require veterinary treatment such as cough suppressants or antibiotics. Families involved in the adoption process have been advised to wait until dogs are symptom-free before bringing them home.
