Kayla Smit made history as Botswana’s first competitor in equestrian sports at the African Youth Games, returning home with a gold medal. Born in South Africa and raised on a family farm in Francistown, Smit developed a deep bond with horses from a young age, which fueled her passion and commitment to the sport. She emphasizes that equestrianism is about trust, patience, and communication between rider and horse, and she has focused on endurance riding—a discipline testing fitness, strategy, and partnership. With the guidance of her coach Hannah Ryan, Smit prepared rigorously through disciplined training and mental preparation, aiming to promote equestrian sport in Botswana and inspire young riders.
Smit’s success is supported by her family, particularly her father, who encourages her pursuit of happiness through horses. She hopes to expand her skills into other equestrian disciplines like show jumping while prioritizing horse welfare above all. Her ultimate dream is to compete at the highest international levels, representing Botswana with pride and helping grow awareness and youth development programs in the country. Smit’s story highlights the importance of dedication, connection with animals, and the potential for equestrian sport to flourish in Botswana.
