The Karoo Donkey Sanctuary, a long-standing refuge for neglected and abused donkeys and other farm animals in the Western Cape, faced a critical challenge last year when it was forced to leave its rented property in Prince Albert due to funding shortfalls and a failed donor pledge. However, thanks to a group of angel investors, the sanctuary has now purchased a 500-hectare farm named ‘Die Hoop’ (The Hope) in De Rust, providing a permanent safe haven for over 400 rescued animals despite ongoing drought conditions. This new location offers space, shelter, and peace, marking a significant and hopeful new chapter for the sanctuary and its inhabitants.
Looking forward, the sanctuary aims to become self-sustainable and expand its facilities, including building a rehabilitation barn and medical center, enhancing education and advocacy against cruelty, and launching a mobile rescue unit for rapid response across the Western Cape. With monthly expenses around R250,000, the sanctuary urgently seeks ongoing donor support, encouraging contributions through its Long Ears Club to ensure continued care for animals like Mercy and Meisie, who have been rescued and rehabilitated. The sanctuary’s mission highlights the importance of community support in protecting vulnerable equines and fighting global threats such as the donkey skin trade.
