Trainer Karl Burke achieved a remarkable feat by turning a modest €12,000 yearling into Half Sovereign, a filly who sold for a staggering €2.6 million at the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale in Deauville. The bidding war for the Prix Miesque (G3) winner was intense, with agent Henry Lascelles ultimately securing the filly for an undisclosed client. Half Sovereign, bred by Haras Des Trois Chapelles and initially purchased from Tattersalls, is set to return to Burke’s training with plans targeting the French Guineas. This sale highlighted the high value placed on proven race fillies, reflecting a broader market trend seen in recent high-profile auctions.
Other notable sales included Lily Hart, a 4-year-old Galileo mare, who fetched €1.05 million, and Margie’s Music, an 11-year-old mare sold for €1 million, both carrying promising pedigrees and foals in utero by top sires. The sale also featured international buyers such as Japan’s Shadai Farm and India’s Poonawalla Stud, underscoring the global interest in quality bloodstock. Despite these standout transactions, the overall Day 1 figures showed a decline compared to the previous year, with lower turnover, average, and median prices, signaling a more cautious market environment as the four-day sale continues.
