Journey of the Outdoor Life Girl: Gladys Hardy’s Solo 1914 Horseback Ride from Spokane to San Francisco

In 1914, 21-year-old Gladys Hardy from Spokane, Washington, embarked on a daring solo horseback journey from Spokane to San Francisco, covering over 1,000 miles through rugged wilderness and small towns. Dubbed the “Outdoor Life Girl,” she undertook the ride as a challenge and a means to sell subscriptions for Outdoor Life magazine, successfully selling over 1,000 along the way. Her journey was marked by numerous adventures, including climbing the steps of the Oregon State Capitol on horseback, encountering wildlife, participating in hunts, and experiencing the hospitality of rural communities. Despite setbacks like a broken leg and a quarantine that halted her cross-country plans, Gladys’s ride was a testament to her courage, resourcefulness, and love of the outdoors.

After completing her ride, Gladys continued her adventurous life, working as a fire lookout in Washington and spending time on a cattle ranch in Arizona, embracing the freedom of solitary riding. Now known as Mrs. Gladys Thompson, she lives in California in her later years, reflecting fondly on her journey and the natural beauty and people she encountered. Her story, originally published in Outdoor Life in 1973 when she was 80, remains an inspiring tale of determination, adventure, and the enduring spirit of the American West.
