Trainer Michael McCarthy is still deciding the future plans for Journalism after the colt’s dramatic come-from-behind victory in the Grade 1 Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park. Journalism’s win secured him an automatic berth in the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar on November 1. Meanwhile, Bob Baffert confirmed that Goal Oriented, who finished a close third in the Haskell, will be aimed at the prestigious Travers Stakes at Saratoga on August 23. Journalism, who competed in all three Triple Crown races and won the Preakness, may have multiple options ahead, including possibly the Travers or the Pacific Classic.
The connections of Gosger, who finished second to Journalism in both the Preakness and the Haskell, reported the horse came out of the race well and will return to Kentucky for further training. Local New Jersey horse Wildncrazynight finished last but gained valuable experience, with owner Staton Flurry optimistic about targeting state-bred races next. On the undercard, trainer Dan Ward celebrated a strong performance from Majestic Oops, who finished second in the Molly Pitcher Stakes, marking a successful day for his stable.
