John C. Harris, California Horse-Racing Mogul and Harris Farms Owner, Dies at 81

John C. Harris, the longtime owner of Harris Farms in California, was a passionate and influential figure in agriculture and thoroughbred horse racing. Under his leadership, Harris Farms produced national champion racehorses like Tiznow and California Chrome, with the latter’s 2014 Kentucky Derby win deeply moving Harris. Beyond breeding and racing, Harris oversaw a diverse agribusiness producing over 30 crops and was a dedicated advocate for the agricultural community, offering mentorship and support to many in the industry.

Harris served in leadership roles within key horse racing organizations and was known for his humility, respectfulness, and commitment to the land and industry. Even in his final weeks, he actively fought to revive live horse racing at the Big Fresno Fair. He passed away at age 81, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in farming and horse racing, as well as a reputation as a compassionate mentor and advocate. He is survived by his wife, Cookie, and many who admired his character and contributions.
