Joe Scurto, with over three decades in the horse racing industry, defines himself as a “race horse ownership evangelist,” dedicated to connecting people with racehorses both on the track and in the pasture. Having held leadership roles in Minnesota’s racing scene, including deputy director of the Minnesota Racing Commission and executive director of the Minnesota Racehorse Engagement Project, he has focused on growing the sport through increased owner engagement and aftercare funding. Recently relocating to Kentucky, the heart of the industry, Scurto aims to replicate his Minnesota successes—such as involving 300 new owners and boosting aftercare funding—in a state with more resources but also challenges like staffing, funding, and easing barriers to entry for new owners.
Scurto highlights the evolution of the industry, noting the rise of syndicates and fractional ownership as positive trends that help bring new participants into racing, despite shrinking foal crops and fewer tracks. He stresses the importance of leadership and structured support to guide newcomers through ownership and aftercare concerns, which have become a top priority for many new owners. Passionate about aftercare, Scurto collaborates with organizations that re-home retired racehorses and support veterans through equine therapy. Ultimately, he advocates for making ownership more accessible and approachable, inviting anyone interested to reach out to him directly to help grow the sport and ensure its sustainability.
