Jody Townend, who secured her first Cheltenham Festival win last year riding Bambino Fever in the Champion Bumper, is aiming for back-to-back success as the six-year-old mare competes in this year’s Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle. She expressed confidence in Bambino Fever’s jumping ability and competitiveness, noting that the mare previously beat geldings, making this year’s mares-only race potentially less challenging. Jody praised trainer Willie Mullins for his support and highlighted the positive atmosphere at his yard during the festival build-up.
Coming from a strong racing family—her brother Paul Townend is a top jockey for Mullins and their father Tim Townend is a point-to-point trainer—Jody transitioned from show-jumping and eventing to racing in her teens. She started working at Mullins’ yard part-time before increasing her commitment following an injury and now works there full-time. Jody encourages aspiring jockeys to work hard and remains grounded by regularly returning home to support her family. The Cheltenham Festival runs from March 10 to 13.
