A group of top American jockeys, led by four-time Eclipse Award winner Javier Castellano, defied U.S. State Department warnings about the dangers of traveling to Venezuela to participate in a high-profile Thoroughbred racing event at Caracas’s La Rinconada Hippodrome. Despite political turmoil, economic sanctions, and U.S. military activity in the region, the event drew a packed crowd of 25,000 passionate Venezuelan fans. The U.S. riders, including notable names like Mike Smith and Katie Davis, were warmly received, with Davis winning two races and boosting the sport’s image amid a difficult year for her family.
The event, organized by former Venezuelan Minister of Sports Antonio Alvarez, aimed to revitalize the country’s once-celebrated racing industry. Alvarez’s efforts evoke memories of Venezuela’s golden racing era, producing stars like Canonero II. Despite the geopolitical tensions and travel challenges, the jockeys experienced a heartfelt welcome, highlighting how horse racing can serve as a unifying and peaceful escape amid broader national strife. Katie Davis summed up the spirit of the trip, emphasizing respect for the risks jockeys take and a message of peace.
