Olympic champion Jessica von Bredow-Werndl has expressed profound grief over the sudden death of her promising dressage horse, Diallo BB, aged 11, following a rapid and severe illness suspected to be caused by bornavirus. Diallo BB, a Dancier x Floriscount gelding bred in Germany, had quickly established himself as a top contender in international competitions with Jessica, achieving seven wins from nine starts, including a notable victory at the World Cup qualifier in Stuttgart. Jessica described the loss as heartbreaking, emphasizing the strong bond and trust they shared during their partnership.
Bornavirus, specifically Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1), is a rare and aggressive viral infection affecting the brain and central nervous system of horses, leading to rapid neurological decline and death. The virus is believed to be transmitted from small mammals like shrews, with horses as accidental hosts, and currently has no effective treatment or vaccine. Due to its rarity and diagnostic challenges, prevention focuses on biosecurity and minimizing horses’ exposure to potential carriers. Diallo BB’s death highlights the devastating impact of this little-understood disease in equine health.
