Jeff Skelton, a former fitness executive from suburban Orlando, has embraced the cowboy lifestyle and brought horseback riding back to Catalina Island after a 20-year hiatus. Although he only began riding in his 40s, Skelton felt a deep connection to the cowboy spirit and recognized the unique joy horses bring to people. Inspired by the island’s history with horses and a personal transformative experience, he founded Catalina Island Horseback Adventures near Avalon’s golf course, offering trail rides that allow visitors to experience the island’s natural beauty and wildlife from horseback.
Skelton’s vision extends beyond just trail rides; he aims to revive the community spirit around horses by creating a welcoming ranch environment with games, picnic areas, and event hosting. He hopes to foster a new generation of cowboys and cowgirls in Avalon, emphasizing the values of care, respect, and grit. With rides suitable for ages nine and up, his operation provides a unique, soulful way to explore Catalina Island, combining adventure, relaxation, and a connection to the island’s rich equestrian heritage.
