Jane Smith: A Lifetime of Dedication to Newmarket Racing Celebrated with Industry Award

Jane Smith’s life and career have been deeply intertwined with the Newmarket racing industry since July 30, 1966, the same day England famously won the World Cup. At 18, she moved to Newmarket to start a career in horse racing after a successful trial with trainer John Oxley. Over nearly six decades, Smith has worked with prominent trainers including Bernard van Cutsem and the Ryan family, becoming a trusted and dedicated member of the Cadland Stables team. Known for her unwavering commitment, she even lived on-site in a caravan to ensure constant care for the horses, and has been a mentor and support to many colleagues.

Smith’s devotion to racing was formally recognized when she received the Dedication Award at the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards, celebrating her lifelong contribution to the sport. Despite the honor, she remains humble and focused on her work, describing racing as her life and expressing no regrets about her path. Her story highlights the vital role of dedicated staff behind the scenes in the racing world and the strong community bonds within the Newmarket industry.
