Jamie Melham rode Another Wil to victory in the C.F. Orr Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse, just days after what would have been the late breeder and owner Col McKenna’s birthday. Melham, who recently married fellow jockey Ben Melham, guided the Street Boss gelding to his first elite-level win while sporting McKenna’s colors.
Trainer Ciaron Maher resisted taking Another Wil to the highest level too soon, allowing the gelding time to mature. Maher hopes Another Wil can achieve more group 1 success over the autumn and beyond, with potential targets including the All-Star Mile and the Futurity Stakes.
The emotional victory was particularly special as it was the first horse bred by McKenna to win a group 1 race. Maher expressed pride in the victory and noted that McKenna would have been thrilled with the achievement, as he was always patient and supportive of the horse’s development.
