The Joint Commission of Insularity Congress-Senate has approved a proposal by socialist deputy Milena Herrera to adapt the training cycle for Guides in the Natural Environment and Leisure Time to better suit the realities of island and coastal territories like Ibiza. Currently, the program includes a significant focus on horse riding, with 170 hours of Riding Techniques and 90 hours of Equestrian Guiding annually, which Herrera argues is impractical for islands where equestrian activities have limited presence and job prospects. The proposal aims to replace part of this equestrian training with specialization in marine-related activities such as kayaking, dinghy sailing, and other nautical sports, aligning education with local professional opportunities.
This adaptation seeks to modernize and expand the educational offerings to better reflect the socio-economic environment of the islands, making the program more attractive and relevant for students. The PSOE highlights that this change would enhance the specialization of island students, supporting strategic sectors like active tourism and sea-related sports, thereby improving job prospects and contributing to the local economy.
