Isabell Werth Pays Tribute to Medal-Winning Dressage Horse Don Johnson After His Passing

German dressage legend Isabell Werth has paid heartfelt tribute to her celebrated horse Don Johnson, who was euthanized at age 24 following an untreatable leg fracture. Known affectionately as “Jonny,” the German-bred Don Frederico gelding was a key partner in Werth’s career, helping her secure European team gold in 2013 and bronze at Aachen in 2015. Together, they achieved 55 wins in grands prix and freestyle events across Europe, including an unbeaten streak of 16 consecutive victories from late 2016 to 2017, and represented Germany at multiple European Championships and the 2013 World Cup Final.

Werth fondly remembered Jonny as a special character and a loyal athlete who remained true to himself and his team until retirement in 2019. She shared a video showing him enjoying his retirement as the “leader of our retirees’ herd,” highlighting his joyful spirit and unique personality. Owned by Madeleine Winter-Schulze, Don Johnson’s legacy is marked by his remarkable achievements and the deep bond he shared with Werth throughout his international career.
