Irish Champion Stakes Winner Economics Dies at Age 5 in India

Irish Champion Stakes (G1) winner Economics, a son of Night of Thunder, has died in India at age 5. Trained by William Haggas and owned by Shaikh Isa Salman Al Khalifa, Economics had a notable career including a dominant 6-length win in the Dante Stakes (G2) and victory in the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano (G2). His career highlight was winning the 2024 Irish Champion Stakes, defeating top horses like Auguste Rodin, Los Angeles, and Luxembourg, which propelled him into the top five of the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings and earned him nominations for Cartier Horse of the Year and 3-year-old colt awards.

After his Irish Champion Stakes win, Economics only raced twice more, finishing down the field in both Champion Stakes runnings. He was sold to stand at Poonawalla Stud Farms in India following his final race at Ascot in October. Jockey Tom Marquand, who rode Economics in six of his seven starts, expressed sadness over the loss of a special horse who rewarded the team’s dedication with an exceptional victory in Ireland.
