Iowa State University Hosts Successful Equine Extravaganza for Youth Development

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach held its annual Equine Extravaganza on April 12-13 at the Ellsworth Community College Equestrian Center, attracting nearly 60 youth from grades 3-12. Organized by the Iowa 4-H Youth Development Program, the event provided a platform for participants to showcase their equine knowledge and skills through various competitions, including hippology, horse judging, and public speaking. Lisa Berkland, a 4-H youth development specialist, emphasized the supportive environment that promotes fairness and sportsmanship.

The event featured 53 youth competing in multiple categories, while 27 participants engaged in creative projects, submitting 68 horseless horse items for evaluation. These projects ranged from photography and painting to digital storytelling and model horses. Top performers in senior divisions earned the chance to represent Iowa 4-H at the Eastern National Roundup in Louisville, Kentucky, this November.

Beyond competition, the Equine Extravaganza fostered connections among participants, encouraging them to explore their interests and build confidence in their equine journeys. The weekend celebrated both knowledge and creativity, leaving attendees inspired and motivated to continue their involvement with horses. A detailed list of award winners was also provided.
