The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is investigating allegations of animal neglect at the Mooloolah Valley Riding Centre, a popular horse-riding facility operating since the 1980s. Concerns about the health and welfare of the horses have been raised by former workers and volunteers, leading to an online petition that has garnered over 2,700 signatures, calling for the RSPCA and DPI to shut down the centre.
Petition organizer Melanie O’Brien, a former manager and volunteer at the centre, claims to have witnessed the mistreatment and underfeeding of the horses, some of which appeared emaciated. Despite these allegations, centre owner Atalanta Moreau vehemently denies any wrongdoing, asserting that her operations have been inspected and cleared of misconduct. She emphasizes her commitment to running the business professionally over her 45 years of service.
The RSPCA has assigned a case number to the complaint, which has been referred to the DPI for further investigation. As the matter is ongoing, both organizations have refrained from providing additional comments. The riding centre also offers accommodation and events, complicating the situation as it remains a community fixture.
