Inside Saratoga’s Horse Breeding Industry: A Tour at Old Tavern Farm

Old Tavern Farm owner Walt Borisenok provided an insightful look into the horse breeding industry in Saratoga Springs during a New York Racing Association (NYRA) breakfast and breeding farm tour. Highlighting Saratoga County as a central hub with over 30 breeding farms, Borisenok explained key aspects such as what buyers seek in yearlings, how horses are assessed for racing health, and the challenges of breeding successful racehorses. He also touched on behavioral differences between colts and fillies in shared enclosures.

The tours, running Thursdays through Sundays during the summer meet, offer a unique behind-the-scenes experience for attendees. Trainer Dale Romans made a notable appearance on the tour day, just hours before his horse Gallo de Fuego won a race at Saratoga. More information about these tours is available on the NYRA website.
