Injured Horse Arty Makes Remarkable Recovery After Abandonment in Wiltshire

Arty, a 12-year-old cob stallion, was found abandoned in Wiltshire in February with a severe head injury caused by a headcollar embedded into his skin, as well as being badly overweight and suffering from mites. Rescued by the RSPCA and taken to the Mare and Foal Sanctuary in Devon, Arty has been receiving veterinary care, including wound treatment, diet control, and liver health testing to manage his obesity. Despite his painful condition, Arty behaved calmly during rescue and treatment, and is now showing promising signs of recovery at the sanctuary’s Newton Abbot Veterinary and Welfare Assessment Centre.

The RSPCA inspector involved highlighted the neglect Arty endured, noting that his injuries likely resulted from being tethered too tightly and struggling to break free. While no one claimed him after an abandonment notice was served, Arty’s care team describes him as a special horse with a bright future ahead. Meanwhile, the pregnant mare found with Arty has since given birth and is recovering elsewhere. The sanctuary encourages followers to stay updated on Arty’s progress through their social media channels.
