Indiana 4-H Day at the Statehouse provided over 100 4-H members from across the state with an educational experience about Indiana government. The event included breakout sessions where students learned how to communicate with officials and understand the legislative process, including discussing and voting on mock bills like making the breaded tenderloin sandwich the state sandwich. Participants also had the opportunity to meet government officials such as Secretary of Education Katie Jenner and Representative Beau Baird, a former 4-H member who emphasized the importance of exposing youth to the Statehouse.
The day concluded with an official tour of the Statehouse, where students explored key locations like the Lieutenant Governor’s office and the Indiana Supreme Court. Many 4-H members expressed how much they learned about the legislative process and civic engagement, which is a key focus of 4-H programming. The event also aligns with a 2025 law allowing FFA and 4-H students up to six excused absences annually to attend such educational activities, highlighting the program’s role in fostering youth involvement in government.
