Natasha Rae, 51, rides her horse, Charlie, down roads in the Tendring district to reach bridleways and hacking trails. However, she often fears for their safety due to impatient motorists unsafely overtaking her, even when her horse is acting up and causing potential danger.
Rae is frustrated by drivers who pass her incorrectly, putting both her and her horse’s lives at risk. She is willing to pull over in a safe place to let cars pass, but urges drivers to be patient and pass safely to avoid accidents.
To reach bridleways, horse riders like Rae must use roads, but they try to avoid doing so during rush hour. The Highway Code advises drivers to slow down to 10mph when encountering a horse on the road, be patient, and pass wide and slow with at least two meters of space when safe to do so.
