Impact of Horse Racing Industry on Rural Jobs and Government Tax Stance

Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Dyke emphasized that the impact of changes to the horse racing industry would extend beyond the sport itself, affecting related local businesses such as blacksmiths and cafes in Somerset, which support racecourses and trainers. Highlighting the importance of Wincanton Racecourse in her constituency, she noted that horse racing plays a vital role in sustaining rural jobs and is central to the countryside community.

In response, Exchequer Secretary Dan Tomlinson clarified that there are no plans to increase taxes on horse race betting, which currently enjoys a 100% tax break. He stressed that horse racing holds a unique cultural significance in the UK and benefits from a government-mandated levy. The government’s broader gambling consultation aims to simplify and level the playing field across the sector, with ongoing collaboration with the industry to assess any potential impacts.
