Icelandic Colt Named Flint Thrives at Mare and Foal Sanctuary

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary at Newton Abbot has joyfully named their young Icelandic colt “Flint,” who arrived with his mother Mavis shortly after birth in May. Initially shy and unhandled, Flint has thrived under the sanctuary’s patient care, becoming relaxed, enjoying grooming, and starting headcollar training. His coat has darkened as he has grown, while his bright blue eyes remain striking, inspiring the name Flint to reflect his steely appearance and spirited nature.

The naming competition engaged supporters nationwide, raising awareness of the sanctuary’s work rescuing and caring for equines and wildlife. Zoe from South Devon suggested the winning name and will be invited to meet Flint. Leyla Anstee, Head of Sanctuary Care, expressed gratitude to all who followed Flint’s story, emphasizing that such kindness enables the sanctuary to provide vulnerable foals with the care and training needed for a bright future.
