The Huasteca Potosina region in eastern San Luis Potosí, known for its rich ecological and cultural heritage, has recently gained attention as a major paleontological site after the accidental discovery of over 750 fossilized bones from Ice Age megafauna such as mammoths, saber-toothed tigers, and giant ground sloths. This significant find, described as the largest paleontological deposit in the area, was initially uncovered during a study of blind cavefish and is now being partially housed in the Huasteco Regional Museum and the Institute of Geology at UNAM for further analysis.

Despite the discovery’s importance, scientific research is limited by budget constraints, with only a handful of bones dated so far, ranging from 30,000 to 8,000 years old. Researchers are seeking funding to conduct advanced studies, including ancient DNA extraction, to better understand the Pleistocene-era ecosystems. The cave site remains undisclosed for safety and preservation reasons and is legally protected by the National Institute of Anthropology and History. This discovery adds to previous Ice Age fossil finds in San Luis Potosí, highlighting the region’s paleontological significance.
