Hunter Holloway’s Jumper Pepita Con Spita Makes Triumphant Return After Two-Year Injury Recovery

Hunter Holloway’s top jumper mare, Pepita Con Spita, was sidelined for two years due to a check ligament injury sustained in a fall during schooling in 2021. Holloway carefully managed Pepita’s recovery with a gradual rehab plan focused on fitness and well-being, allowing turnout and avoiding pressure to return prematurely. By 2023, Pepita was back competing at increasing heights, culminating in a significant win in the $32,000 CSI5* speed class at the American Gold Cup in September, signaling her full return to top-level competition.

Throughout the recovery, Holloway prioritized Pepita’s happiness and physical readiness, emphasizing fitness and letting the mare dictate the pace of her comeback. Known for her natural speed and efficiency, Pepita’s personality is mild and affectionate, enjoying attention and a “princess lifestyle.” Holloway’s goals are to continue building Pepita’s fitness and gradually reintroduce her to high-level competition, supported by a strong team including trainers Don Stewart and Luís Sabino, and primary rider Dylan Gamble.
