Animal charity rescuer Lisa Dean, while searching for a missing dog named Teddy on a Nottinghamshire farm in 2023, uncovered severe animal neglect involving hundreds of creatures living in filthy, overcrowded conditions. The discovery led to the seizure of 455 animals, including horses, donkeys, dogs, guinea pigs, and a llama, many suffering from illness, injury, and malnutrition. The RSPCA described the conditions as some of the worst they had encountered, with animals living in squalor, untreated for medical issues, and some requiring euthanasia.
The farm owner, Lee Hayes, admitted to 25 offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and received a 12-month prison sentence along with a lifetime ban on keeping animals. Hayes’s girlfriend, Tammy Heath, also pleaded guilty to animal welfare offences and was given a suspended sentence and a five-year ban on keeping dogs. The rescue operation involved over 100 staff from multiple charities, and the RSPCA plans to seek substantial cost recovery for the extensive care and investigation efforts. Lisa Dean expressed relief that justice was served after witnessing the traumatic conditions firsthand.
