How to Keep Your Horse Safe and Calm During Firework Season

Horses are naturally prone to panic from fireworks due to their flight instincts, making firework season a stressful time for owners. A 2020 Blue Cross survey found that 69% of horse owners worry about their horses’ welfare during fireworks. To help manage this, the British Horse Society (BHS) recommends several strategies including gradually desensitizing horses to loud noises and flashing lights, staying informed about local firework events, ensuring yards and stables are safe and tidy, and consulting vets for possible calming treatments. Owners should also report firework-related incidents via the BHS Horse i app to help monitor risks.

Additional practical advice includes keeping horses in familiar, secure surroundings, removing hazards from fields, securing rugs, and preparing stabled horses by acclimating them to indoor conditions before fireworks begin. Playing music or leaving lights on can help distract horses, and owners are encouraged to stay calm and present during fireworks to quickly respond if needed. While some supermarkets have banned fireworks sales, legal restrictions in the UK limit when fireworks can be sold and set off, but private displays remain unpredictable, so communication with neighbors is advised. Overall, careful planning and preparation are key to minimizing horses’ stress and injury risks during firework season.
