Bristol-based equine charity HorseWorld has canceled its annual open day scheduled for August 9 due to an outbreak of Streptococcus Zooepidemicus (Strep Zoo), a respiratory infection affecting about 10% of its 110 horses. While Strep Zoo is less severe than strangles for healthy horses, many of HorseWorld’s rescued horses are immunocompromised and at higher risk, prompting the charity to restrict access to essential staff only to protect both animals and visitors.
The cancellation represents a significant financial loss, as the event was expected to raise £20,000. To mitigate this, HorseWorld is hosting a virtual fundraising event featuring videos, vet chats, and behind-the-scenes content. Founded in 1952 to rescue retired working horses, HorseWorld now focuses on rehabilitating abandoned and neglected horses, relying on public support to continue its care during this challenging time.
