Horseshoes & Handlebars: Promoting Trail Safety and Understanding Between Mountain Bikers and Equestrians in Nevada County

The “Horseshoes & Handlebars” clinic, returning on March 21 in Nevada County, is a collaborative event aimed at improving trail safety and communication between mountain bikers and equestrians who share multi-use trails. Sponsored by the Gold Country Trail Council, Bicyclists of Nevada County, and Youth Bicyclists of Nevada County, the clinic offers presentations on trail etiquette, right-of-way rules, and how horses perceive their surroundings. Key lessons include approaching horses slowly and verbally identifying oneself to prevent startling them, as horses have heightened senses that can trigger flight responses.

Last year’s event attracted over 40 participants, including many younger riders, and featured hands-on exercises where mountain bikers practiced safe approaches to horses and even experienced horseback riding to better understand equestrians’ perspectives. The clinic emphasizes mutual respect and clear communication among all trail users—hikers, runners, bikers, and riders—to ensure safe and enjoyable outdoor experiences in Nevada County’s public lands. As trail use increases in spring, the event encourages courtesy and awareness to protect everyone sharing the trails.
