Horses & Us: Celebrating the Deep Bonds Between New Zealanders and Their Horses

Rodney author Jo Emeney’s new book, Horses & Us, celebrates the deep connections between New Zealanders and their horses, inspired by her own bond with her bush pony, Amazing Blazing Billy. Over two years, Emeney traveled across the country gathering 23 true stories that highlight diverse equestrian experiences—from mounted games riders and Paralympians to profiles of at-risk horse breeds. The book, published by Massey University Press and supported by a Creative New Zealand grant, features rich photography and illustrations that enhance its storytelling.

A poignant final chapter focuses on Billy’s near-fatal knee infection and recovery, underscoring the profound relationships between horses and their humans. The book launch is set for March 12 at Takapuna Library, with Horses & Us available in major bookstores for $37.
