The NGDO highlights that horseback riding on the dunes of the Alentejo coast has become a growing threat to the natural regeneration of these sensitive areas, disrupting the balance of the coastal ecosystem. Despite a reduction in waste pollution, the physical damage caused by horses—such as root destruction and soil compaction—hinders dune recovery, accelerates erosion, and endangers bird nesting sites.
The dune systems are crucial for biodiversity preservation and serve as natural barriers against marine erosion, protecting beaches and coastal habitats. The organisation warns that continued destruction from horseback riding could lead to irreversible damage to local flora and fauna, as well as destabilize the coastline, emphasizing the need for greater awareness and responsible use of the coastal strip.
