Horse Seized in Neglect Case Adopted by Equine Outreach Rescue in Bend

In April 2024, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office seized 15 horses due to neglect, with many found dehydrated and underweight. One of these horses, named Easter, has since been adopted by Equine Outreach, a horse rescue organization in Bend. This partnership helps provide care and permanent homes for neglected horses while ensuring space for future rescue cases.

Jean Poirer, the owner, pleaded guilty to eight counts of second-degree animal neglect and was sentenced to five years probation, one day in jail, and barred from owning farm animals during probation. She was also ordered to reimburse the sheriff’s office for the horses’ care. Some horses remain in custody until their legal cases are resolved, with others available for adoption through the DCSO Rescue Ranch.
