William Connolly, a horse riding coach in his 60s from Midleton, Co Cork, was sentenced to nine years in prison for raping a 14-year-old girl in 2019. He groomed the victim by providing her with alcohol and equestrian clothing, exploiting her passion for horse riding to manipulate and abuse her over a four-month period. The victim bravely testified about the trauma she endured, describing how Connolly’s abuse was a gross breach of trust and how the trial process was emotionally challenging but empowering.

Ms Justice Siobhan Lankford emphasized the significant age disparity and Connolly’s position of authority, rejecting any suspension of the sentence despite his previous good character and medical issues. Connolly denied all allegations, calling the victim’s account fantasies, but was found guilty on multiple counts including rape and sexual assault. The victim expressed her determination to move forward with her life and give a voice to others who suffer in silence, while support resources were provided for those affected by similar abuse.
