In unincorporated Marengo, Illinois, firefighters and sheriff’s deputies rescued a horse trapped in floodwaters caused by the overflow of Coon Creek following recent storms. The horse was found about 600 feet from shore, standing on a small peninsula in cold, deep water and suffering from significant hypothermia. Rescue teams, including a veterinarian, used a boat and waded through the water to reach and guide the horse safely to a nearby roadway before transporting it to a veterinary facility for further care.
The rescue was described as challenging and time-sensitive due to the unpredictable and dangerous floodwaters. One person involved in the rescue was taken to a hospital for evaluation of cold exposure. Officials praised the coordinated efforts of all personnel involved, emphasizing the risks floodwaters pose to both people and animals.
