Horse Rescued After Falling Into Deep Water-Filled Ditch in Herefordshire

A horse near Bromyard, Herefordshire, became trapped in a deep, water-filled ditch, submerged up to its neck and unable to escape due to steep embankment sides. Specialist rescuers from Bromyard and Pershore Fire Stations, along with Water First Responders and a local farmer, coordinated a careful rescue operation. After the horse was sedated by a vet to keep it calm, rescuers used lifting strops and a telehandler to slide the animal onto a rescue board and pull it to safety.

Following the rescue, the horse was able to stand and walk back to its stable, where it received a thorough veterinary check-up and was found unharmed. The Cheltenham Equine Vets spokesperson noted the incident was handled smoothly, with the horse emerging none the worse for the ordeal. This successful rescue highlights the effective collaboration between emergency services and veterinary professionals in handling large animal emergencies.
