Horse Powertrain Unveils Future Hybrid Concept for Converting EV Platforms to Hybrids

Horse Powertrain, a joint venture between Renault and Geely, has developed the Future Hybrid Concept, which allows automakers to convert electric vehicle platforms to hybrids. This concept can help hybridize BEV platforms to meet changing customer demand and eliminate the need for multiple platforms and production lines. The technology will be showcased at the Shanghai auto show and could be on the road by 2028.

The Future Hybrid Concept includes an internal combustion engine, electric motor, and transmission that can support various fuels. It can fit in existing EV platforms as a replacement for the front electric drive unit, as well as in traditional combustion-engine platforms. The module serves as a range extender to the existing battery and enables all-wheel drive in full-electric and parallel combustion-electric modes.

Horse Powertrain, based in London, plans to build about 5 million engines a year and develop common powertrains to save money. The joint venture, which includes Renault, Geely, and Aramco as shareholders, has already secured a contract for an extended-range EV using a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine in a small bus for the South American market.
