Horse Owners Campaign for Quieter Fireworks and Stricter Distance Rules to Protect Livestock

Horse owners, led by stable operator Sarah Russell in East Yorkshire, are campaigning for stricter regulations on fireworks to reduce their loudness and protect animals. They want the maximum noise level lowered from the current 120 decibels to 90 decibels, roughly the sound of a kitchen blender, and for Bonfire Night displays to be held at least 500 meters away from horses and livestock. Russell highlighted the distress fireworks cause to horses, some of which require sedation, and criticized the vague legal term “near” regarding proximity to animals.

The Department for Business and Trade acknowledged the disturbance fireworks can cause and emphasized existing measures, including noise limits and time restrictions, alongside safety campaigns promoting responsible use. However, campaigners argue these are insufficient and are pushing for clearer, more protective laws to better safeguard animals from the harmful effects of loud fireworks displays.
