A horse became trapped in deep mud in a field near Ryde on Saturday evening, prompting emergency services to respond around 6pm. Firefighters from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, including a specialist Animal Rescue Unit, worked extensively using large animal rescue equipment to free the 17-hand horse.
Despite their prolonged efforts, the horse could not be rescued, and a veterinary surgeon on site made the decision to euthanise the animal to prevent further suffering. The incident was officially stood down by 8:15pm, though activity at the scene continued into the evening.
