Horse Country, Ireland’s premier immersive equine tourism experience, was launched at the Punchestown Festival on April 30th. Supported by Fáilte Ireland and local councils, it offers 15 unique visitor experiences that provide behind-the-scenes access to the training yards of renowned trainers like Aidan O’Brien, Johnny Murtagh, and Jessica Harrington. Visitors can also explore prestigious stud farms such as Kildangan and Coolmore, witnessing the life cycle of thoroughbreds from foals to champions.
The initiative, developed in 2021 by leaders in the Irish thoroughbred sector, aims to leverage Ireland’s rich equine heritage and world-class breeding industry to enhance tourism in Kildare and Tipperary. The thoroughbred industry significantly contributes to the Irish economy, generating €2.45 billion and employing over 30,000 people, while attracting approximately 1.2 million racing enthusiasts annually.
Cathal Beale, Chairman of Horse Country, emphasized the initiative’s potential to boost both domestic and international tourism, showcasing Ireland’s exceptional racing and breeding industry. Fáilte Ireland’s Brian O’Flynn highlighted Horse Country as a milestone in promoting sustainable tourism development, enhancing visitor experiences, and fostering collaboration among local businesses, ultimately benefiting the economy of the region.
