Horse Chased by Dog Jumps Metal Gate onto Road Amid New Livestock Worrying Laws

A 20-year-old mare named MJ was chased by a dog out of her field, forcing her to jump a metal five-bar gate onto a road, resulting in injuries. Owner Charlotte Mitchell, who was at work when alerted by a passerby, quickly gathered help to secure and care for MJ, who was found sweaty and with cuts. Despite reporting the incident multiple times to Cambridgeshire Constabulary, no police action has yet been taken, leaving Charlotte frustrated and worried about future occurrences. She has also received support from the British Horse Society.

This incident coincides with the recent passage of the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) Bill, which has now been sent for royal assent and will become law. The new legislation aims to strengthen police powers to tackle livestock worrying, including detaining dogs suspected of such behavior and imposing harsher penalties on offenders. Charlotte emphasized that her experience highlights the urgent need for this law to protect livestock from similar attacks.
