Hopefield Animal Sanctuary in Brentwood, Essex, has mourned the loss of Bella the donkey, a cherished resident who passed away unexpectedly on January 25. Bella was one of the sanctuary’s earliest rescues under new management nearly 16 years ago, arriving in poor health but later thriving after receiving dedicated care. She was known for her resilience and kindness, and notably gave birth to her daughter Peggy shortly after her rescue.

Founded in 1983, Hopefield spans 53 acres and houses over 600 animals, ranging from horses and farm animals to snakes and birds, many of whom were rescued from neglectful situations. Bella’s passing deeply affected the sanctuary community, who remember her as a symbol of the sanctuary’s mission to provide love, safety, and peace to animals in need.
