Hillsdale College Equestrian Club Revives Tradition with Hunter-Jumper Competitions and Community Spirit

The Hillsdale College Equestrian Club, led by junior Sarah Morris, offers students weekly riding lessons and multiple horse show competitions each semester, primarily focusing on the hunter-jumper style. Most participants take the one-credit “English Riding” class, which includes eight lessons at Teetor Equestrian under instructor Betsy Teetor ’05. The club fosters a close-knit community where riders improve together, and it welcomes all skill levels, providing opportunities to register for shows and compete in flat or over-fence classes.

The club’s origins trace back to when Teetor was a student at Hillsdale, and after a period of inactivity, it was revived by Bri Bertsch ’24 with Teetor returning as coach in 2020. Students typically travel an hour or more to competitions, attending for a single day due to budget constraints. Upcoming events include regional competitions in February, with potential advancement to zones. The club emphasizes inclusivity and enjoyment for all horse enthusiasts, regardless of prior riding experience.
